A three-week artist residency at Röstånga Konsthall with Russian artist-activists in exile and former Pussy Riot members Lusiné Djanyan and Alexej Knedljakosvski. Together with the Swedish workers education association ABF, Röstånga Konsthall invited the artists and their three children to spend time in the village of Röstånga, produce work for the local arts space and share their experiences both about creating art under a dictatorship and working in exile in Sweden. The art residency explored how the popular education movement can engage collaboratively to highlight and address issues of democracy and freedom of speech through art.
This resulted in the exhibition Pussy Icons, which has since travelled to five venues in the region, as well as public workshops in the village, recorded conversations and the public event ‘Röstånga Skapar’ with contributions by and public conversation with poets Jimmy Alm and Ida Börjel, visiting feminist HipHop Collective Soundz of the South from Southafrica and Damali Young.
